The rotating plate on the drill floor of the rig that turns the drill string clockwise is called a rotary table.The drill string and bit receive power from the rig's drive system through the rotary table, which surrounds the four- or six-sided kelly bushing and kelly drive.

However, the majority of rigs still use a rotary table as the primary mover for the drill string.

Top-drive rigs, which have their drive motor at the top of the rig, typically use rotary drive tables.The bottom hole assembly is first attached to the sections of the drill string.The drill string is constructed starting at the top by attaching new sections of drill string to sections in the bore and the top drive motor as sections of drill string enter the bore.Drill string sections are screwed together in a clockwise direction.The rotary table is used to tighten the drill string's segments in a clockwise direction.
